Holiday Airport Travel Guide for Milwaukee Travelers

Holiday flights from Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) and Chicago O'Hare (ORD) leave on the busiest travel days of the year, so the trip to the airport needs more time than an ordinary week.

This guide covers how early to arrive, which days are busiest, when to leave Milwaukee for O'Hare, the TSA rules that slow holiday travelers down, winter weather, and where car services meet passengers at each airport. The sources for every figure are listed at the end of the page.

Arrival time

How early should you get to O'Hare or MKE during the holidays?

Plan to reach the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. The Chicago Department of Aviation repeats that guidance for O'Hare and Midway before every busy travel period:

"The TSA and airlines continue to recommend arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight."Chicago Department of Aviation, spring break travel release, March 2026

Milwaukee Mitchell gave the same two-hour advice for its spring break peak days, "especially if they're traveling with children or checking bags," to leave time to park, check luggage, clear the TSA checkpoint and absorb unexpected delays. Holiday weekends deserve at least the same margin.

Peak days

Which days are busiest for holiday air travel?

The Sunday after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for U.S. air travel on record. TSA screened 3,134,613 people on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, its highest single day, and no day since had passed 3 million through late October 2026.

1.65 millionWisconsinites AAA expected to travel 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving 2025

The Chicago Department of Aviation expected more than 1.63 million of those Thanksgiving-week travelers at O'Hare alone, likely the busiest Thanksgiving travel week in the airport's 70-year history, with nearly 290,000 on the peak Sunday. TSA saw the same pattern coming:

"We are projecting that the Sunday after Thanksgiving will be one of the busiest travel days in TSA history."Adam Stahl, Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy TSA Administrator, Nov. 21, 2025

The December rush

Year-end travel peaks on the weekends just before and just after Christmas. Chicago's airports expected nearly 4.8 million passengers from Dec. 19, 2025, to Jan. 5, 2026, with O'Hare's busiest day on Saturday, Dec. 20, and TSA's year-end high came on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, at 2,924,593 people screened.

Leaving Milwaukee

When should you leave Milwaukee for O'Hare on a holiday?

Leave early enough to cover the drive, the holiday traffic peaks and the two- or three-hour airport window together, because Milwaukee to O'Hare is about 80 road miles on the region's busiest highways.

Holiday traffic follows a predictable shape. For Thanksgiving 2025, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation listed the heaviest travel times as Wednesday, Nov. 26, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 30, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with Friday and Saturday afternoons also busy. AAA's traffic partner INRIX named Sunday before 11 a.m. as the best time to drive.

The Illinois Tollway expected nearly 9.2 million vehicles over the Thanksgiving holiday, with more than 1.8 million on the Wednesday before. It suspended most temporary lane closures from noon Wednesday through 9 a.m. the following Monday, though work zones already in place stayed.

  • Morning flights on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or the Sunday after usually beat the worst road traffic.
  • Afternoon and evening flights on those days overlap the 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. peak, so build in extra driving time.
  • Return flights landing on the Sunday after Thanksgiving meet the heaviest airport crowds, so expect a longer walk from the gate and a wait at baggage claim.

A Milwaukee to O'Hare limo service plans the pickup time from your flight time, terminal and the day's traffic, so the timing math is done before you leave the house.

Security

What TSA rules matter most on a holiday flight?

Identification, carry-on liquids and holiday foods cause most of the checkpoint delays that holiday travelers can prevent at home.

REAL ID or another accepted ID

REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. TSA asks every adult traveler to bring a REAL ID, passport or other acceptable identification and have it out at the checkpoint entrance. Since Feb. 1, 2026, travelers without acceptable ID can pay $45 for TSA ConfirmID, and TSA says the process can take up to 30 minutes.

Liquids in one quart-sized bag

Carry-on liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes go in one quart-sized bag, in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

Pies yes, gravy no

Pies, cakes, turkey, stuffing and fresh vegetables can go through the checkpoint. Cranberry sauce, gravy, canned fruit or vegetables, preserves, jams, jellies and maple syrup belong in a checked bag.

For a printable version of these steps, use the airport travel checklist.

Weather

How does winter weather affect holiday airport trips?

Holiday travel weeks often bring the season's first snowy drives in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, which slows highways before it delays flights.

Check your airline's app the night before and the morning of departure, and keep the extra margin even when the forecast looks clear: one snowy morning on I-94 changes the whole trip.

Pickups

Where do car services pick up at O'Hare, Midway and MKE?

At O'Hare, pre-arranged limousines meet passengers at designated areas on the lower level center lane, and the Chicago Department of Aviation notes it can take between 5 and 20 minutes for the vehicle to reach the pickup location.

  • O'Hare: call your car service once you have claimed your luggage, then head to the lower level center lane at your terminal.
  • Midway: limousines pick up on the lower level center lane at Doors 1 and 2.
  • Milwaukee Mitchell: confirm the meeting point with your ride team before you land. Anyone picking you up in their own car gets the first 30 minutes free in the hourly garage.

Rideshare pickups at O'Hare use separate zones at Terminals 2 and 3, so a booked airport chauffeur service and an app ride do not meet you in the same place.

Our holiday rides

How Milwaukee Fly Limo plans holiday airport rides

Milwaukee Fly Limo runs airport rides 24 hours a day from Milwaukee and its suburbs to Milwaukee Mitchell, Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway, and plans each pickup around the flight details you provide.

  • Flight tracking: we track the flight status, and if its timing changes, we work with you to adjust the pickup.
  • On time, every time: pickups are planned around your flight time, and chauffeurs often arrive a few minutes early.
  • Upfront quotes: your price is quoted from distance and time and locked in when you book. It changes only if the ride changes, and there is no surge pricing on busy holiday days.
  • Late-model luxury SUVs with room for holiday luggage, and child and booster seats as a paid add-on when you ask at booking.
  • Licensed and insured, with a chauffeur team that brings over 20 years of combined professional driving and transportation experience.
"It was such a peace of mind to be able to concentrate on packing and not have to worry about parking at the airport."A Google reviewer, October 2024
